I just, some Cocoa Milan, it needs to happen sometimes. You just need a break and you just, you just need it.

I 100 % agree with that. feel like anti-technology. They're like, you know, when I grew up, we didn't have this. Well, in this day and age, we have this. our kids are gonna have so much more. My kids know how to use things on my phone that I don't know how to use. And you're teaching them how to adapt to that technology as they grow.

And it's like, you don't. Maybe you put your kid in school all day and I homeschooled my kid all day. So maybe this is the 15 minutes you saw my kid on a screen. Like you don't know what everybody's going through. And so I.

Okay, so these people, now that you say that, it puts them in a different category too, because they're in the same category, kind of like vegans and kind of like the Marines. If you are in a room with a Marine or a vegan or a we don't do screens person, you'll know within the first 15 seconds, as they've got to tell you. Semper fi devil dog.

They will tell you for sure. Or kind of anybody who plays pickleball really. Right. Cause I can't go 10 minutes without, Hey, do you play pickleball? Okay. So we're there too, I guess.

Quick pickleball wisdom in and out before you know it. USA Pickleball Rule 4.8 updated the drop serve. You can now release the ball. This is how I like to do it. You can now release the ball from your paddle instead of just your hand. In the past, you had to drop it from your free hand. No paddle tricks allowed and you couldn't spin it. Now you can let it roll off your paddle's face, but here's the catch. Gravity only, no flicking, spinning, tossing or anything with force. The ball has to fall naturally, has to be below your waist.

and your opponent must see the release. It's still a drop serve, just with a paddle twist. Legal, simple, sneaky. That's just the tip.

That's it. you're creating a community around it as well, which is what pickleball is really known for. So let me ask you this, Trish, what was the first design that made you go, okay, we've really got something here?

I made a shirt for my husband and I to play in a pickleball tournament, one of our first ones, and my kids got sick and he couldn't play, so I wore it with another person, another guy, and I almost did the design. I think he's cute, and I think she's cute, but I'm so glad we didn't do that, because I had to change up my partner last minute. But I made this shirt, and it had...

kind of a, there's some iconic spots in this town that we're playing in called Carlsbad, New Mexico. And so I made a shirt with the pickleball cords and this bridge and the river. And it said, think I'm lost, Carlsbad, New Mexico. And everyone wanted that shirt. got my brain thinking like, how can I add fun things to the pickleball space? And how can I do this for them? And then went from there.

I think I put them on some mugs and I might have some. They're my first designs. I kind of want to do some new ones.

That's a super, I like that.

That's a super idea. You could give it to the different guys you play with on the court. could. Yeah. So you're a mom, obviously a creative person and now just a business badass if you don't mind me saying that. So what did becoming an entrepreneur teach you about yourself that you didn't know before?

you know what? I was thinking about that as this brand's kind of grown. I feel like I've grown right along with it. When I started this, I didn't have, I don't know, I would say much confidence. I had this belief in myself, but it was kind of just hiding out, you know? So I read this book at the beginning and I just, right before that book, I hit this point where I knew I needed a change.

I like popped off social media. I wanted to create something, but I didn't know what. And I like to say when the pain of staying the same becomes greater than the pain of change. That's when you go. This whole entrepreneur process of like reading books and telling myself affirmations to believe I could do that. it's just really pushed me to persevere more than I thought I ever could. Right. It's just a big waves like this whole process. Some days I'm like,

I'm doing great. I love this design. People are commenting like they love it. And then there's a huge dip and like, my gosh, I'm overwhelmed. It comes with the territory, but I'm just learning or like, I cannot figure out this part of the website. It crashed. So what do I do here? Right. You know, so it's just been a huge growth of persistence and perseverance to just take it to where I've taken it now. And I'm sure it's going to take a lot more.

to get moving on also financially becoming way more savvy there. That's been a big thing too.

that's so nice. Yeah. I didn't know that was a, I didn't know if it would resonate with other Pickle Hoods, but, and I say Pickle Hoods as in like the little communities. Which one is there's like a greater whole, but then like you have your group, you have your people, that's your Pickle Hood. But yeah, our little group, there's a girl that started it on 2-2-2. She's like, you gotta do the dance. So do a little spin and then pop it over the net.

And I think that's very important for people to know too, is you're not just a, you know, you're not just out there being a clothing manufacturer and bringing these on, you're also a player. that, you know, there are, I mean, there are a ton out there and being a player is so much, so important to what you do because you're, you've got the vibe check going on all the time and you know what the players want. Not just the designs, but the cuts too, like you mentioned and the fabrics as well. So, you know, there's, there's so much that goes on there. So let me ask you then,

Do people really underestimate how much heart and hustle go into the fun brand that is the pickle hood?

I would absolutely, yes, agree with that. I like to think of it as like on Instagram when they see me pop up, it's like a tiny blip in their day. And they get that email in their inbox, tiny, tiny blip in their day. But to me, it is on my brain constantly. The other day, I'm looking for it right now. This will tell you just how much it's on my brain. My daughter, she was 11, she put a piece of paper on my computer, taped it to it.

And it had 10 ideas for a shirt with like a little cute play on words that I think. But yeah, it consumes you because you have not only the Instagram and the Facebook ads and the marketing side, you have to squeeze in designs here and there and email marketing. And then you're doing the customer service side too. So it's just, I think it's way more than I thought it would be when I started it, but I enjoy it so much that my brain loves.

And that's, you know, we like to illustrate that to people who would just think, I can just go do this, right? No, you're the duck, right? Your feet are just consistently and constantly paddling hard under the water. Nobody sees that. They just see what looks perfect on the surface. good brands like yours, they do it really, really well.

I'm trying. It's like a fail forward thing at this point. Like try and fail, try and fail. Okay, this is going to be good for now. And then like revamp it in a little bit too. Yeah, do it. I think that's been my whole motto this whole time.

What do you hope people feel when they throw on Pickle Hood gear, know, shirt or hat or whatever it is. What do want them to feel? Because a brand is about feeling.

I want to tie in a story here really quick, if that's okay. We were at the courts, my husband and I, they're a bunch of like maybe 30 and 40 year olds, and this little 80 year old lady showed up at the courts, and she kind of walked on slowly and wanted to play, and she's like, I'm not that great, but she wanted to play, and she hopped on. Any ball that went to her, she was killing it.

She was hustling us about one ball. She got lobbed and she stood there and she looked at her partner and was like, I'm not getting that. can't do that. And like, she's like, I don't move that fast. And so her 20 something partner, just those young guy, he stepped it up and he would run back and he was covering that baseline and those lobs. And she was up there like taking fire at the net.

Her positive attitude was everything. Everyone was just smiling and feeling connected. And it was people from all walks of life that I would never have met before. And so I guess when people wear the Pickle Hood gear, I want people to recognize what this has brought to communities, to families. There's just...

That's absolutely perfect. You really are getting to the core of what the sport is and what the sport should be. You know, yeah, great. mean, you're a million dollar player with million dollar gear. I might get it. You're at the top, right? But that's not who the majority of pickleball players are. We are the people that are just showing up from our different walks of life, different backgrounds, different experiences. And we're all coming together around this one awesome sport. And then

So KFC recently introduced a fried chicken flavored toothpaste. The flavors are inspired by all of KFC's 11 herbs and spices. And they say it's like biting into a hot, juicy piece of KFC original recipe chicken. And it completely sold out on their website.

And now there are tubes of it on eBay going from $50 to $5,000. Chicken flavored.

So it comes from Vietnam, the Philippines, and other parts of Southeast Asia. And it's made, it's wild or captive, that's what makes the price difference. It's either wild or captive.

Copi Luac. It's farmed versus wild caught. That's where you get the price differences. The wild source Copi Luac naturally occurring is obviously harder to get and extremely rare and expensive. Farmers literally forage for the droppings in forest. Yep. That's someone's job to go out and get... Gleaning? No, going out and getting it. Did you think I said gleaning?

Okay. Poop hunting is what I call it. Just keep it simple here on the the podcast, the official podcast, the pickleball. So it's far more common and controversial. Civets are kept in cages. This is the farmed ones and force fed coffee cherries. They're already eating them. So I don't think they're force feeding them. These conditions often involve animal cruelty, poor hygiene. They're not brushing with the KFC toothpaste for sure. And result in lower quality beans, but it's cheaper and more scalable.
